What is the Newburgh Ministry?
The Newburgh Ministry is a multi-cultural community center located in the City of Newburgh's East End. In solidarity with our neighbors, we accompany each other in presence, service, and transportation. Who runs the Newburgh Ministry?
The Newburgh Ministry operates cooperatively with staff and volunteers. We are looking for volunteers to walk with us as we live out our commitment to the Gospel in solidarity with our neighbors. We are committed to using the skills and talents of volunteers in a way that promotes the dignity of all people.
What does the Newburgh Ministry do?
- Runs a "Hospitality Room" community center.
- Operates a Play and Learn Center where children are cared for in a stimulating, enriching environment, while their parents make use of the other programs.
- Extends its hours in the winter months to provide a warm, safe environment for up to 15 men who are homeless. This part of the ministry is referred to as "Winterhaven."
- Operates a thrift store.
- Offers on-site Advocacy/Counseling Services.
- Extends radical hospitality to those who have been marginalized by celebrating the dignity of each person.
How can a Volunteer share in the Newburgh Ministry?
Programs in which a volunteer could work at Newburgh include:
- Assist in the thrift store.
- Assist in the hospitality area by helping people make phone calls and referring people to needed services.
- Assist with the administrative needs of the Newburgh Ministry by filing, writing thank you letters, and developing an easy to maintain database.
- Work with the Winterhaven coordinator to obtain, train, keep and schedule volunteers.
- Assist in the Play and Learn Center.
- Assisting in informal case management with experienced staff.
What skills do I need to be a Volunteer at Newburgh Ministry?
Helpful skills needed for the above include:
- A sense of humor.
- Ability to deal with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Fluency/facility in Spanish or Creole.
- Ability to be flexible in meeting the demands of people living in poverty.
- Ability to join a collaborative model where all decisions are made by consensus.
- Computer skills.
Newburgh Ministry Volunteers will
put together a job description in conjunction with
the staff. Usually this will consist of a number of
hours per week in two or three areas at the center.
Time at the center may be combined with volunteer
service at the Queen of Peace Family Center and Provincial
Office/LSA Retirement Facility in Walden, NY.
