                  Family Lifeline Volunteers

PERNET FAMILY HEALTH SERVICE, Worcester, MA

Pernet Family Health Service depends on a solid corps of volunteers to assist staff in accomplishing our mission of supporting families to be physically, socially, psychologically and spiritually whole. Our goal is to provide long-term strengthening and enhancement of family life through our comprehensive social services and family development programming.

Among the opportunities for volunteers to enhance Pernet's work with low-income, disadvantaged individuals and families are the following:

            

Family Lifeline Volunteer Opportunities

Service Descriptions

1) Youth Coordinator-Develop and implement programs to serve the youth of our neighborhood. Program goals include socialization, recreation, enrichment, and mentoring for all children involved.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a role model for youth
  • Recruit youths from the Green Island Community
  • Develop interesting, meaningful activities to meet the goals of the program
  • Recruit adult volunteers from local colleges to serve as mentors
  • Coordinate snacks through the federal food program administered by Friendly House
  • Serve as mentor for at least one youth
  • Monitor expenses to stay within budget guidelines
  • Meet with youths and guardians to establish ongoing working relationships with Pernet families

2) Neighborhood Outreach Worker:  Although many programs at Pernet Family Health Service are available for residents of Worcester County an individual is needed to continue to establish the agency as neighborhood based. This would include outreach to the Green Island Area to educate residents about services and programs offered by Pernet.

Responsibilities

  • Identify neighborhood resources and gaps in services
  • Publicize agency programs available to the local community
  • Help individuals determine their eligibility for entitlement programs and other opportunities, including food stamps and MassHealth, and assisting them in the application process 
  • Build relationships with local agencies such as the Canal District and the Oak Hill Community Development Center
  • Research other appropriate programs that Pernet Family Health Service may be able to offer local residents (a neighborhood internet lab, a community garden, a social service resource center)

  • Sensitivity in relating to disadvantaged persons from various cultural and economic backgrounds
  • Must show initiative in generating ideas and actions independently of a supervisor
  • Dedication to the mission of Pernet Family Health Service
  • Reliability and a strong work ethic
  • A willingness to connect with the local community and learn about entitlement programs in Massachusetts
  • A positive attitude

Skills/Qualifications

  • Person should be skilled in the use of web-based application processes such as those used for Foodstamp and MassHealth applications.
  • Working knowledge of Word and Excel.
  • An ability to connect with individuals  

3) Facilities Manager: This person is responsible for overseeing the maintenance and repairs for the two buildings that house Pernet's programs.  These 1920’s vintage three-deckers, located in a low-income, densely-populated neighborhood of Worcester, are in need of constant attention and care. 

Responsibilities

  • Determine facility needs.
  • Schedule and prepare conference rooms for events and meetings
  • Repair basic housing issues
  • Secure bids and donations from contractors for major facility repairs

Qualities

  • Must show initiative in facility improvement without actions independently of a supervisor
  • Dedication to the mission of Pernet Family Health Service
  • Reliability and a strong work ethic

Skills/Qualifications

  • Basic understanding of housing systems (plumbing, electrical, structural, and landscaping)
  • Flexibility around job responsibilities

 

4) Professional-Level Interns: Pernet Family Health Service has a core staff of professionals who provide health, social service, and education to Worcester area families. Opportunities exist for full-time and part-time professional interns to serve within the following programs:

  • Maternal and Child Health Nursing
  • Parent Education and Support
  • Early Intervention Education
  • Family Development and Spiritual Programming
  • Technology Support and Data Collection
  • Organizational Support and Fund Development
